Dallas Mavericks backup point guard Gal Mekel underwent surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee and is out indefinitely, the team officially announced Friday. Mekel has played minimally for Dallas this season, averaging just 9.6 minutes per game in 30 appearances.

Mekel noticed soreness in his right knee after Dallas' game against the Orlando Magic on Monday, did not play against the Los Angeles Clippers Wednesday and was ruled out for their game against the Phoenix Suns Friday. He returned to Dallas on Thursday to meet with a team physician and was diagnosed with the meniscus tear.

The injury will put more responsibility on rookie Shane Larkin, who is now the only healthy backup point guard behind Jose Calderon. Larkin has struggled through his rookie season, averaging just 3.2 points per game on 35-percent shooting from the field.
Dallas is currently hanging onto the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference with a 23-17 record.
