New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers are the most valuable NBA franchises

NBA franchise valuations are in and the Knicks and Lakers are at the top of the mountain.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Knicks are the most valuable franchise in the NBA, worth $1.4 billion, and the Los Angeles Lakers trail in second place, reports Forbes. Forbes released their annual revenue and franchise valuation report on the NBA, listing the 30 teams' current value, revenue and operating profit through the 2012-2013 season. Only four teams operated at a loss.

While the Knicks may be the most valuable and have the highest operating profit, the Lakers generate the most revenue in the NBA at $296 million last season. Following the Knicks and Lakers are the Chicago Bulls, worth $1 billion. The Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets round out the top-five most valuable franchises in basketball.

The Miami Heat rank seventh, worth $700 million, generating $188 million in revenue and turning a $29 million profit. The least valuable NBA franchise is the Milwaukee Bucks, worth $405 million, but they still managed to turn an $11 million profit.

The Brooklyn Nets (-$19 million), Philadelphia 76ers (-$3.8 million), Minnesota Timberwolves (-$2.7 million) and Atlanta Hawks (-$3.6 million) are the only franchises that posted operating losses last season.
