Los Angeles Lakers waive Shawne Williams

The Lakers have parted ways with Shawne Williams and now have an open roster spot.

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers have waived veteran forward Shawne Williams, the team officially announced. Williams signed a one-year, veteran's minimum contract with the Lakers. His contract would have become fully guaranteed if the Lakers did not cut him Tuesday.

Williams played in 32 of the Lakers' 34 games this season, averaging 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He shot only 37 percent from the field and 32 percent from three-point range, unable to reach the career-high marks he achieved in his previous season under head coach Mike D'Antoni during the New York Knicks' 2010-2011 season.

The Lakers roster is now at 14 players, one under the 15 player maximum a team can carry through the season. The team will also save money by waiving his non-guaranteed salary, though the savings are minimal.

The Lakers can sign an additional player to replace Williams and teams can now sign free agents to 10-day contracts. This also provides flexibility in trades, giving the team an additional roster spot in any potential trades.
