76ers put Michael Carter-Williams on trade block in June

Lowe reports the Sixers didn’t like the return they were offered for Carter-Williams, but that won’t stop them from trying to seek out deals in the future. The point guard is currently rehabbing from shoulder surgery in May and it’s unclear when he’ll return to the court.

The Sixers are still in rebuilding mode, and they currently have more of an interest in stockpiling draft picks than stockpiling wins. While Carter-Williams won Rookie of the Year and could be the point guard of the future in Philadelphia, flipping him also has the potential to bring back valuable draft picks.

Lowe notes that the Sixers know how deep the point-guard position is in the NBA, and although Carter-Williams is a talented young player, his production may not be too difficult to replace.

Drafting a player in the first round, watching him win Rookie of the Year and then looking to move him immediately just seems off. Considering how bad the Sixers were and how bad they’ll likely be this year, dealing away a promising young player surely wouldn’t sit well with the fans unless the return was massive. The organization has a clear plan in place, but at some point, they need to start building on some known commodities.

Shopping Carter-Williams while he’s rehabbing from shoulder surgery also doesn’t make the most sense. The point guard is expected to make a full recovery, but it’s unlikely any team would make their best offer for an injured player.

No trade of Carter-Williams is imminent, and it still seems like a bit of a long shot that anything goes down. Still, don’t put anything past Hinkie. I give a Carter-Williams trade a 3/10 chance of happening in the near future.
