The New Orleans Pelicans will be without shooting guard Eric Gordon for an indefinite amount of time after he suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the team announced Monday. Gordon suffered the injury during New Orleans’ loss to the Utah Jazz on Saturday.

That’s bad news for the Pelicans even given Gordon’s early-season struggles.

Gordon is off to a poor start this season, averaging just 9.5 points per game while shooting under 40 percent from the field. But his loss will nevertheless be felt because it alters the Pelicans’ rotation and exposes the team’s shallow bench. Austin Rivers is surely in line for more minutes and perhaps Jimmer Fredette will jump back into Monty Williams’ rotation, but neither is the threat Gordon is.
The Pelicans’ shooting guard has been slowed by injuries repeatedly since being acquired by New Orleans in the Chris Paul trade. He reaggravated a right knee issue early in his first season, which ultimately knocked him out for all but nine games that year. The same injury then lingered into the next season and kept Gordon out for 40 contests. He played in 64 games last season before having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in March.
