NBA schedule 2014: Kevin Durant’s first game back is against Anthony Davis

Durant will make his season debut against the Pelicans after missing the first 17 games of the year due to foot surgery.

The NBA has quite the tasty menu Tuesday night, with 10 games and several intriguing matchups on the docket. The biggest story of the evening is in New Orleans, where Thunder star Kevin Durant makes his season debut after undergoing surgery on his left foot in October.

Durant's return comes a game after Russell Westbrook returned to the Thunder lineup from his own injury. Westbrook was superb, putting up 32 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in just 24 minutes in a dominant win over the Knicks. Durant will be on a minutes restriction, but Oklahoma City is hoping he can make a similar impact to Westbrook.

Now that the stars are back for the Thunder, they’ll try and dig themselves out of a 5-12 hole. The good news is Oklahoma City is only 4½ games behind eighth-seeded Phoenix in the Western Conference gauntlet.

Making Durant's return all the more exciting is that it comes against Anthony Davis, so this one should be loads of fun. Let's take a look at the entire menu for Tuesday.

The appetizer

Bucks at Cavaliers, 7 p.m. ET

The Cavs have found a groove after four consecutive losses, winning three straight games by an average margin of 23.3 points. Not only did the offense kick into high gear, but the defense was stellar as well. Cleveland gave up just 93.2 points per 100 possessions in the three wins, per NBA.com, which is far better than its current defensive rating of 104.3. The Bucks are coming off a 117-103 loss to a short-handed Rockets squad, and this will be the first game of Milwaukee's hellish December. Eleven of the Bucks' 15 December games come against teams currently in the playoff picture, and two others come against the Thunder and Kings. We'll get to see what this young Bucks team is made of this month.

The main course

Thunder at Pelicans, 8 p.m. ET

With Durant out to begin the year and Westbrook sidelined for most of it as well, the Thunder offense only ranked above the 76ers in terms of efficiency. On the positive side, the defense ranked in the top 10 and kept them in most games. There's no reason to expect any defensive dropoff with Durant and Westbrook back, so expect Oklahoma City to take off with the offense set to get back to its usual high standards. For the Pelicans, Davis will try and help his team end a three-game slide. Davis had 30 points and 13 rebounds in his last game after a couple of rough outings, but New Orleans still couldn't get past Washington.

The dessert

Raptors at Kings, 10 p.m. ET

The Trail Blazers-Nuggets game is also a good option for the late viewers, but I like the storylines in this game. The Raptors stumbled in their first outing without DeMar DeRozan, falling to the dreadful Lakers in overtime. Toronto will need to play better on the defensive end if they want to take down Sacramento. The Kings have lost three straight games after starting the season 9-5, but two of those games didn't have DeMarcus Cousins, who has been battling an illness. Cousins didn't practice Monday but is hoping to return to the lineup against Toronto. This game also pits Rudy Gay against his former team. Gay didn't work out in Toronto, but he has found a niche after getting traded to Sacramento.
