Good evening, NBA trade season is over and Danny Granger is sad

EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED: This one post describes everything that actually happened on deadline day. Enjoy!

DEADLINE WEEK IN EMOJI: I judged all the trades from deadline week using the Emoji Rating System. Stay away from the Sixers, generally.

TO THE BATCAVE: The NBA trade deadline went out like a lamb ... until Yahoo!‘s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news that Danny Granger had been traded to the Sixers at about 3:32 p.m. Eastern. (This is why you wait a little while before making sweeping judgments.)

The Pacers swapped out Granger, who has struggled to find his form after returning to the best team in the East, for Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen. Indiana is in pole position for home court advantage, but certainly hasn’t rested on its laurels. A bold move for Larry Bird and crew.

A STRIP-MINING PROJECT: Meanwhile, Sam Hinkie continues to implode the Sixers. He sent Spencer Hawes to Cleveland for two fringe NBA players and second-round picks, and took on Granger and a second for Turner and Allen. In all, the Sixers picked six second-round picks on Thursday while sending one back out (for Byron Mullens). Hope you like traveling, Sixers scouts!

GARY NEAL IS FREE: Well, actually he’s a Bobcat! Charlotte grabbed the shooter and Luke Ridnour for Ramon Sessions and Jeff Adrien. The playoff chase is on.

TAX CUTS: The Clippers, who have a very shallow frontcourt, traded two bigs (Byron Mullens, Antawn Jamison) to cut their tax bill dramatically. L.A. will now pay less than $300,000 in luxury tax.

FAILURE TO CUT TAXES: The other L.A. team was not so fortunate: no one would take Jordan Hill or Chris Kaman for what the Lakers were demanding, meaning that the team’s only successful trade was the super complicated Wednesday night special sending Steve Blake to Oakland.

Kobe was not happy with the Blake trade, by the way.

JUST MISSED: The Clippers reportedly considered trading for Iman Shumpert up to the last minute, but bailed. Whether his Wednesday MCL sprain had anything to do with remains to be seen.

OTHER NO-GOS: A few other intriguing names didn’t get moved, so we delved into their situations.

There’s Luol Deng, who will be a free agent and couldn’t fetch Cleveland a first-round pick.

There’s Omer Asik, who managed to “survive” two trade deadlines in one season, which is some flavor of sorcery.

Thaddeus Young remains trapped on the Titanic.

And finally, there’s Pau Gasol, the man who will be 78 years old and still a Laker that the team is trying to move at the deadline.
