NBA trade rumors: Pelicans will be active after Jason Smith injury

The Pelicans could make a move before the trade deadline after losing Jason Smith for the season.

The New Orleans Pelicans have been "extremely active" in trade discussions since losing starting center Jason Smith for the season after he underwent knee surgery, reports Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. The trade deadline is less than three weeks away and the Pelicans might be ready to shake up their roster after a disappointing first half of the season.

New Orleans is currently seven games out of the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. Injuries have ravaged the team throughout the year.

Anthony Davis has had a strong sophomore season but missed eight games because of a fractured hand. Ryan Anderson missed the start of the season, played in 14 games, and is now expected to miss at least two months with a herniated disc in his back. Jrue Holiday is also out indefinitely after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his tibia.

It's unclear what the Pelicans would be willing to trade, but the team has an immediate need for help at center. There aren't many appealing pieces the team can part with and New Orleans traded its 2014 first-round draft pick to the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire Holiday. The team has been rumored to be interested in trading shooting guard Eric Gordon and could look to split up its guard rotation after signing Tyreke Evans to a four-year, $44 million contract last summer.

Evans is averaging 12.5 points on 40 percent shooting while playing 24.7 minutes off the bench per game.
