It wouldn't be a complete night in the NBA without a little bit of officiating controversy, and we got some in the Sacramento Kings' 109-101 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. Kyle Lowry fouled out of the game with 25 seconds remaining. It appeared as though Lowry hit a three-pointer that would've cut the Kings' lead to three, but he was instead whistled for kicking out his legs into the oncoming defender.

With the score stuck at 105-99, Lowry jumped up demonstratively, raced toward the other end of the floor in disbelief and was assessed a technical and disappeared into the team’s tunnel after being ejected from the game. Officials would later explain it was the kicking motion — where the shooter swings his leg out in an attempt to get fouled — that earned the call against the Raptors’ point guard.

This would be an example of the famed "Reggie Miller rule" that was implemented prior to the start of the 2012-13 season in an effort to curb the act of offensive players kicking their legs out in an attempt to draw contact and a defensive foul. Whether Lowry intentionally threw his legs out or not is a difficult question. One could say he did, and that Ben McLemore hit the ground as well. But it didn't appear egregious and might have been better left alone in that late-and-close situation.
