New York Knicks interested in signing Lamar Odom, according to report

The Knicks are interested in signing Lamar Odom ahead of free agency.

The New York Knicks are considering signing veteran forward Lamar Odom, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Odom has not played in the NBA during the 2013-2014 season and was released by European club Laboral Kutxa Baskonia in March following a back injury. The Knicks are interested in Odom as directed by new president of basketball operations Phil Jackson:

Sources told ESPN.com that the Knicks, at the behest of new team president Phil Jackson, have been looking into the possibility of signing Odom since the 34-year-old’s short stint playing in Spain ended and are weighing whether to go through with adding the Queens native to their roster before the regular season ends.

Posting and Toasting: Knicks considering Odom

New York has an open roster spot available and is considering offering a two-year deal with a team option for the 2014-2015 season. This would be the first signing for the team since Jackson joined the franchise as president of basketball operations. Signing Odom prior to free agency could allow the team an opportunity to evaluate Odom leading up to the upcoming free agency period. Jackson has also met with Odom recently, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Odom was reportedly working toward a return to the NBA and drew interest from both the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers throughout the year, but instead went overseas to return to organized basketball. He was medically ruled unfit to play for at least a month, however, and was released from his two-month contract.
