Hall of Fame coach Dr. Jack Ramsay has died at 89 years old, ESPN reported on Monday morning. He had been battling various forms of cancer on and off for the past 15 years. Veteran NBA writer Peter Vecsey reported on Friday that Ramsay was in hospice.

The legendary former head coach owns a 864-783 record in the NBA. That includes 10 years with the Portland Trail Blazers, starting with the franchise's lone championship season in 1976-1977. He retired as a coach in 1989 after three years with the Indiana Pacers, and became a broadcaster, first with the Philadelphia 76ers and then the Miami Heat. He worked as an analyst for ESPN Radio as recently as last season. In 1992, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

When he stepped away from the booth about a year ago, Blazers Edge’s Dave Deckard paid tribute to his legacy in Portland.
