Spurs GM R.C. Buford wins executive of the year

The San Antonio Spurs’ R.C. Buford won the executive of the year award.

USA TODAY Sports

San Antonio Spurs general manager R.C. Buford was named the NBA's 2014 Executive of the Year after helping his team to the best record in the regular season, the league announced Wednesday. While a number of NBA front office members turned busy offseasons into success, Buford did a lot by making sure his team changed little from last year's Western Conference championship squad.

Among the offseason moves Buford oversaw included re-signing center Tiago Splitter to a four-year, $36 million contract and signing gunner Marco Belinelli for a bargain of two years and $5.6 million. Buford and San Antonio also convinced veteran guard Manu Ginobili to re-sign for two years.

Buford's honor comes after coach Gregg Popovich won the 2014 Coach of the Year award.

Buford earned 58 points in the voting, done by fellow executives and not media members. He had 11 points on Phoenix Suns general manager Ryan McDonough's 47 and 24 more points than Portland general manager Neil Olshey, who garnered 34 points. Toronto's first-year general manager, Masai Ujiri, came in fourth place with 28 points.
