Clippers select C.J. Wilcox with 28th pick in 2014 NBA Draft

The Clippers get another backcourt player, adding Huskies guard C.J. Wilcox

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Clippers drafted Washington Huskies guard C.J. Wilcox with the 28th pick in the draft and immediately improved their outside shooting.

Wilcox played four years at UW and was one of the more decorated three-point shooters in the country during his senior season. Though he took 7.2 three-point attempts per game, the 6’5 Wilcox hit an impressive 39.1 percent beyond the arc. He showed small improvements in each of his college seasons and in 2013-14 topped out at 18.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Wilcox isn’t just a spot-up shooter. He can score off the bounce and often got his jumpers by working in pick-and-roll situations. A 6’10 wingspan certainly helps his cause on offense, and it projects Wilcox as a high-potential player on the defensive end as well.

Wilcox will need to improve his build, as he weighed in at just 201 pounds at the draft combine. His ball-handling will need some improvement, as he could have trouble shaking defenders and getting to the rim in the NBA.

The pick is a little confusing considering the Clippers already have a young shooter on the team in Reggie Bullock, not to mention Jamal Crawford. Pair that with the fact that they needed to pick up Glen Davis off waivers last spring to play significant playoff minutes, the logical pick figured to be a big man. Doc Rivers must know something about C.J. Wilcox no one else does.
