Why this makes sense
Though Patrick Beverley is a great defensive point guard, the Rockets could stand to get an offensive upgrade with Lowry. The likely effect would be to push out Jeremy Lin. The Rockets reportedly have a deal in place to get cap space in return for Lin. Lowry’s offensive versatility and court vision as a passer could be a great addition to an offensive that thrives on spacing.
Why this doesn’t make sense
NBA Free Agency
Houston would have to offer big money to outweigh Toronto’s ability to offer more years, and this could compromise Houston’s ability to attract another big time free agent they seem to desperately want. If the Rockets have to overpay for Lowry’s talent, it could negatively affect their ability to sign other free agents, and that’s not something Morey is probably keen on doing.
On the other hand, Toronto seems willing to use their ability to offer Lowry a bigger contract, which, according to Marc Stein, will start at $12 million per year.
Likelihood: 5/10
I think familiarity with the organization could help Lowry’s tendency to sign there, but the favorite still seems to be Toronto.
