Ed Davis agrees to 2-year, $2 million deal with Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers got a young forward on the cheap by agreeing to a short-term deal with free agent Ed Davis on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a two-year, $2 million contract with free agent big man Ed Davis, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The second year of the deal is a player option, giving Davis the ability to re-enter the market next season if he breaks out in L.A.

A former first-round pick by the Toronto Raptors, Davis hit unrestricted free agency this summer after being let go by the Memphis Grizzlies. He struggled to establish himself with both teams, but remains an intriguing upside player since he is just 25 years old.

Last season with Memphis, Davis averaged 5.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, but played fewer than 20 minutes a night for the first time in his career. That’s obviously not a good sign for a healthy player entering his mid-20s, and it’s part of why his departure from the Grizzlies this offseason was expected.

The Lakers could be a good landing spot for Davis, given the team's lack of obvious frontcourt options entering next season. Jordan Hill and first-round pick Julius Randle should play significant roles, plus Ryan Kelly and Robert Sacre are still around, but that situation still leaves ample room for Davis to find his place.
