Dallas is strenuously trying to put together another championship contender around Dirk Nowitzki.

The Dallas Mavericks needed another shooter at a discount price, and signing Rashard Lewis seemed to be in line with their needs. But Dallas' hopes took a blow on Tuesday evening with the announcement that Lewis would need knee surgery soon, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears.

To make matters worse, FOX Sports Southwest’s Mike Fisher tweeted that Dallas did not know about Lewis’ knee issue before they signed him back on July 19. The nature of the injury isn’t known yet, but it can’t sit well with the Mavericks’ front office.

Dallas looking for backup point guard

The Mavericks are trying to shore up their backup point guard spot and will meet with former Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Nelson, 32, is a one-time All-Star and had previously spent his entire career in central Florida. Last season, Nelson averaged 12.1 points and seven assists per game while shooting 39.4 percent from the field.

Dallas traded away last year's starter Jose Calderon on June 25 when they acquired center Tyson Chandler in addition to guard Ray Felton. The Mavericks have also met with Blazers free agent Mo Williams.

Nets finalize deal with Bojan Bodganovic

Brooklyn has finally come to terms with 2011 draft pick Bojan Bogdanovic on a three-year, $10.1 million deal, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Bogdanovic, 25, has been playing overseas and last season averaged 14.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game for Turkish side Fenerbahçe Ülker. At 6'8, Bogdanovic will help secure the small forward spot for the Nets, who recently lost Paul Pierce to the Washington Wizards.

SB Nation blog Nets Daily has Bogdanovic’s contract as part of the mini mid-level exception, starting at $3.3 million per-season.
