Isaiah Thomas undergoes wrist surgery, expected to be ready for training camp

Phoenix’s new guard needed a minor procedure to repair his left wrist, but should be ready for the start of training camp next month.

Phoenix Suns guard Isaiah Thomas underwent left wrist surgery on Thursday, the team announced. The procedure is not expected to require a lengthy recovery, and Thomas should be able to return in time for the beginning of training camp next month.

Details on the injury are unclear, but Thomas had a strained ligament in his wrist last season as a member of the Sacramento Kings. The 25-year-old played through the pain to appear in 72 games in 2013-14, but back in February, Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported that "there could come a time in the near future when Thomas could need to consider procedural remedies for the wrist."

We don’t know if this is the same wrist that limited Thomas last season, but it wouldn’t be surprising given the information at hand. The Suns likely wanted to be cautious with their new guard after handing him a four-year, $27 million contract, and the surgery won’t even keep him out for the start of the regular season.

Last season, Thomas averaged a career-high 20.3 points and 6.3 assists with Sacramento. The team didn't show much interest in re-signing him as a restricted free agent, though, leading to the sign-and-trade with Phoenix. Now, he'll play a key role in an impressive Suns backcourt along with Goran Dragic and (most likely) Eric Bledsoe.
