Raymond Felton suspended 4 games for guilty plea on gun charges

Felton will miss the first four games of the 2014-15 season after pleading guilty to gun charges in New York state last month.

The NBA has suspended Dallas Mavericks guard Raymond Felton without pay for the first four games of the 2014-15 season as a result of his guilty plea on gun charges in New York, the league announced Thursday.

Felton was arrested on felony gun charges on Feb. 25 after his estranged wife, Ariane Felton, brought his unlicensed firearm to an NYPD station house on the Upper West side. She said that the former Knicks guard waved the gun around "in an aggressive way" on several occasions, although he never pointed it at her.

The 30-year-old turned himself in later that day, and then pleaded guilty to the charges in court last month.

Felton avoided jail time by taking a plea deal, but still received 500 hours of community service and a $5,000 fine from the New York court. He won’t be required to complete his community service in that state, however, presumably allowing him to stay around the Mavericks while he fulfills those hours.

Dallas acquired Felton, along with Tyson Chandler, from the Knicks this offseason as part of the six-player trade. He's expected to fill a significant role on the team next season, although Devin Harris and Jameer Nelson will likely handle the point guard duties early on while he sits.
