Derrick Rose turned the ball over 11 times. He missed 20 of 33 shots. He had just one assist. It wasn't exactly a pretty performance for the former MVP, and certainly not an efficient one. But, Rose's timing was good, his defense was great and he came through late to lead the Bulls to a 113-111 overtime win over the Warriors in Golden State.
2015 NBA scores: Derrick Rose leads Bulls to overtime win in Golden State
The former MVP went for 30 and handed the Warriors their first home loss in 17 games, plus three other things we learned in the NBA on Tuesday night.
Rose's one assist? It came with 18 seconds left in regulation after Stephen Curry foolishly threw the ball away.
In overtime Rose also hit what turned out to be the game-winning shot, a beautiful step-back jumper with nine seconds left over the outstretched arms of Klay Thompson. He finished with 30 points and played more than 40 minutes in a game for the first time since April 15, 2012.
There was also Rose's defense on Curry which, after the game on NBA TV, Chris Webber described as one of the best defensive performances he's seen all year. Rose chased Curry out on the perimeter and stayed with him in the lane. He funneled him towards Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol down low. The result was one of Curry's worst games of the year. Curry finished with 23 points and nine assists, but was just 9-for-23 from the field and 2-for-9 from behind the three-point line. As a team, the Warriors went 0-for-13 on three-pointers in the second half.
David Lee and Thompson led the way for Golden State. Lee, handed more minutes in the absence of Andrew Bogut, who sat out Tuesday because he was sick, finished with 24 points and nine rebounds. Thompson had a team-high 30 points -- his third straight game reaching the 30-point mark -- and 10 rebounds. Twenty of his points, however, came in the first half. Thompson, like the rest of his teammates, struggled to connect on shots late in the game. Draymond Green added in 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and had game-tying tip-in with less than two seconds left in regulation.
The loss snapped the Warriors’ six-game win streak and 17-game home win streak. It was also Golden State’s first loss this year to an Eastern Conference team and just the team’s second home loss of the season.
Gasol and Noah each added in 18 points for the Bulls, with Gasol pulling down 16 rebounds and Noah grabbing 15. With the win Chicago improved to 30-17 including an impressive 17-6 on the road.
3 other things we learned
The Cavaliers are still unbeatable. Make that seven in a row for Cleveland, who knocked off the Pistons in Detroit by a score of 103-95. Once again -- and just like he has since returning from his two-week absence -- LeBron James looked like the LeBron James of old. He finished with 32 points and seven assists and just seemed unstoppable all game. Kyrie Irving's 38 points also helped; Shawn Marion was the Cavaliers' third leading scorer with eight points. LeBron and Kyrie carried the scoring load in a major way. Cleveland is now 26-20, and slowly climbing up the Eastern Conference standings. Not only is LeBron explosive again, but Timofey Mozgov gives Cleveland a dimension it didn't previously have -- the Cavs can now stop teams at the rim. If the Hawks weren't playing like the 1992 Dream Team, the Cavaliers would have a shot at getting up to No. 1.
The Grizzlies are the second best team in the Western Conference. Because the West is insanely tough, this title is a fluid one, but right now the Grizzlies look awesome. Their latest conquest came Tuesday in the form of an impressive 109-90 road win over the Mavericks. The win was the Grizzlies' fourth in a row. They now stand at 33-13. Zach Randolph led the way for Memphis, with 22 points, on 10-of-15 shooting, and 10 rebounds, but it was far from a one-man effort. Marc Gasol had 15 points, Courtney Lee and Nick Calathes each had 13 points, Vince Carter finished with 12. This team is deep, talented and without many holes, especially with how Randolph has been playing of late. The Warriors are awesome, but don't sleep on the Griz.
The Heat can't beat the Bucks. The Heat are now 0-3 against Milwaukee this year, the latest a 109-102 defeat at home. At 20-25, they now trail the 23-22 Bucks, who are currently in possession of the Eastern Conference's No. 6 seed, by three games. Milwaukee may not be flashy, but its solid, deep and not going anywhere. Brandon Knight led the Bucks on Tuesday with 17 points, but six other Bucks put up double figures. Also -- and perhaps most impressive -- Milwaukee managed to go the whole game without having a single shot blocked by Hassan Whiteside. Whiteside did have 16 points and 16 rebounds, but was not the defensive presence he's been over the past few weeks. Credit for that should go to Jason Kidd who, it turns out, might actually be a solid coach. A year ago that's something not many people would have predicted. The future is bright in Milwaukee, and it looks like a playoff berth is on the way.
Play of the Night
This is vintage Rose, the type of stuff he used to do all the time. Few point guards in the history of the sport could combine explosiveness, speed and strength into one move the way Rose could. A LOT happened after this play, but that doesn't mean that this one should go unnoticed.
4 fun things
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquio both attended the Heat-Bucks game in Miami. Someone should have found a ring somewhere and DEMANDED that they throw on some gloves and fight.
The Pelicans put together a strange commercial which features Anthony Davis in a cowboy hat and Ryan Anderson dancing while wearing a wig. Yeah, you should watch it.
