Steve Kerr is getting closer to returning to the bench for the Golden State Warriors. Kerr could return to coach the Warriors as early as this weekend, reports ESPN's Tim McMahon.

Kerr had back surgery in the offseason and was expected to be fully recovered at the start of the season but a spinal fluid leak altered his timetable. He tried to coach during preseason but the constant migraines were too much to handle and he decided to take time off to heal. Assistant coach Luke Walton took over head coaching duties and has led Golden State to the best start in NBA history.

Two months into the season, Kerr's return now seems imminent. There's still no timetable, but he's with the team in its two-game road trip to Texas. After losing to the Mavericks on Wednesday without Steph Curry, the Warriors will face the Rockets on Thursday before returning home to Oakland to host the Nuggets on Saturday. Kerr could make his season debut then, if he can sustain the rigors of the road trip.

“It’s obviously a possibility,” Walton told ESPN about Kerr returning to the bench this weekend. “He hasn’t said he’s going to. To be honest, I don’t think he knows yet. I think that’s part of why he’s on this road trip, to see how his body handles the travel and getting into Houston at 1 a.m. tonight to turn around and play again then get on another plane and fly home and get in late again. So that’s part of why he’s here on this trip, whether or not this weekend is a realistic return or not.”

The Warriors are 29-2 for the season and are 2.5 games ahead of the Spurs for the best record in the West. Kerr led the team to a 67-15 record and a championship last season.
