The NBA standings are a complete mess

Good morning. We have that and more in Friday’s NBA newsletter.

Good morning. Let’s basketball.

Your full rundown of Thursday scores ...

MIA 97, OKC 95
DEN 106, TOR 105
ORL 103, UTA 94
SAS 103, MEM 83
POR 123, IND 111
BOS 114, SAC 97

Big wins for the Heat and Magic there. Disappointing losses for Indiana and Toronto, two teams in the hunt for that No. 2 spot in the East. Similarly, the West is practically begging for a clear third-best team, and the Thunder just can't claim the spot. The NBA standings are a total mess.

DURANTULA: Not even sure what to say about this epic Kevin Durant move and finish. The swerve he puts on Josh McRoberts is only matched by the off-arm, unblockable dunk on Chris Bosh. Like WHAT DO YOU DO?

WELL ... Jesus Gomez writes that Utah can survive Rudy Gobert’s injury. Not a great start for this run, though.

POP + SAGES: Gregg Popovich got emotional during his in-game interview with Craig Sager. Very sweet.

ALL-STAR UNIFORMS!

HE RUINS EVERYTHING: Seth Rosenthal on how Stephen Curry upsets the natural order of basketball as entertainment by wrecking the flow with his crazy makes.

YUP: Steph doesn’t even need the ball to wreck defenses, writes Ethan Sherwood Strauss.

STEPH’S REVOLUTION: Benjamin Morris on how defense barely impacts Curry and how his bad shots are better than most players’ good ones.

THE STRUGGLE: Really good piece from Anthony Puccio on Rondae Hollis-Jefferson’s tough upbringing. RHJ opens up, and it’s a powerful thing.

VERY COOL: Dwyane Wade came into the Heat facility after hours a month ago to get a soak in the cold tub ... and Kobe was already there, having been given run of the place by Pat Riley. Kobe then revealed that D-Wade should really bring his kids to the game since it’d likely be Kobe’s last in Miami.

SPEAKING OF KOBE ... He did a big sitdown with Ernie Johnson for Inside the NBA.

NEXT: Marc Spears wonders if Ben Simmons is the next LeBron.

HUMOROUS: Russell Westbrook’s new Foot Locker ad features Jalen Rose, Dr. Phil, jokes and a good message.

THE NEXT GREAT DUKE WING: Ricky O’Donnell breaks down the potential of Brandon Ingram.

TONIGHT TONIGHT: ESPN has Nets-Knicks (7 p.m. ET) and Cavaliers-Pelicans (9:30 p.m. ET). Rockets-Mavericks might be your best alternative (8:30, League Pass).

Happy Friday. See you next time.
