Spurs believe Tim Duncan will be back, still chasing LaMarcus Aldridge, per report

It’s going to be a busy offseason for the Spurs.

The San Antonio Spurs believe Tim Duncan will return for the 2015-16 season, according to Marc Stein of ESPN, and they hope to have cap room to sign free agent LaMarcus Aldridge, who is unlikely to return to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Duncan -- along with fellow veteran Manu Ginobili -- has yet to make a formal decision, but both he and Ginobili will likely return to the Spurs. According to Stein, the Spurs are optimistic they will be able to sign both players at salaries that allow them to re-sign restricted free agent Kawhi Leonard and pursue Aldridge.

The Spurs are reportedly at the top of Aldridge's list ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.

Entering the free agent period -- which begins July 1 -- the Spurs will have 10 players on last year's roster who will enter free agency. For the Spurs to sign Aldridge, it's likely that they would let Danny Green and Marco Belinelli walk to clear cap space.

If Duncan, 39, does return to the Spurs as expected, it would be his 19th season in the league. Adding Aldridge would make his quest for a sixth NBA title even more likely.
