The 2015 Pan Am Games are underway in Toronto and the United States' men's basketball team is looking for its first gold medal since 1983. The Americans have long dominated other international basketball competitions such as the Summer Olympics and FIBA World Cup, but Puerto Rico is the defending champion at this event.
Pan Am Games 2015: Schedule and results for the men’s basketball tournament
The Pan Am Games is one international hoops competition the U.S. hasn’t dominated.

Held every four years the year before the Summer Olympics, the Pan Am Games feature teams from across the Americas competing in various sports. The U.S. had dominated in basketball early on, winning eight gold medals in nine tournaments from 1951-83, but since then, the team hasn’t finished better than second.
Led by Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea, Puerto Rico won the 2011 tournament, ending a streak of three straight gold medals for Brazil. Since 1987, Brazil has won four gold medals in hoops at the Pan Am Games, while Puerto Rico has won two and Argentina has won one.
The women’s tournament, meanwhile, was already completed earlier this week with hosting nation Canada taking the gold medal in a title game victory over the United States. Cuba finished third. The American women’s team last won the gold at this event in 2007.
