LeBron James won’t talk to the Cavaliers until Tristan Thompson is re-signed

LeBron James is a free agent this summer, but you might not realize it given how little buzz there's been about the availability of the game's best player. That's because everyone knows James will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers eventually -- he's just waiting for the team to take care of other business first before agreeing to a new contract.

James will not begin contract discussions with Cleveland until the Cavs lock up power forward Tristan Thompson, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. The Cavs had reportedly reached an $80 million extension with Thompson on the first day of free agency, but the deal fell apart. There has been no update on the contract talks since.

The Cavs have already had a busy and expensive offseason. The team inked Kevin Love to a $110 million max extension, then re-signed wing Iman Shumpert for $40 million. When the team re-signs James and Thompson as widely expected, owner Dan Gilbert will be facing an enormous luxury tax bill. That doesn't even include Matthew Dellavedova and J.R. Smith, who are also free agents.
