As for what we're doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Tuesday, Jan. 19. So, with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
Jrue Holiday, PG, Pelicans ($6,200): No team in the league is allowing more FanDuel points per game to opposing point guards than the Lakers, who Holiday and the Pelicans face Tuesday. In fact, the Lakers can't really stop anyone. Also, there's a chance Anthony Davis is forced to miss this game with a back injury, which would mean more shots and opportunities for Holiday.
Kobe Bryant, SG, Lakers ($7,000): He's banged up, so he might not play, but if he does Tuesday is the night to have him in your lineup. As bad as the Lakers are at defending point guards the Pelicans are at containing opposing shooting guards. You know Bryant is going to get shots up. The question is: will they go in. Against New Orleans they likely will.
Monta Ellis, SG, Pacers ($6,300): Over his last 10 games Ellis is averaging 16.6 points, 6.3 assists, 2.8 boards, 1.6 steals and 1.3 three-pointers and on Tuesday he gets to face a Suns team that likes to play fast and can't guard anyone. Can't ask for more in a matchup.
3 players to avoid
Carmelo Anthony, SF, Knicks ($9,000): Anthony has been playing some of the best ball of his career lately. He's passing more than ever, and even seems to be enjoying himself. But on Tuesday he's facing a Celtics team that is strong defensively and that has one of the players in the league (Jae Crowder) who can match up physically with Anthony. Carmelo might have an OK game on Tuesday. But he's unlikely to justify this high price tag.
Dwight Howard, C, Rockets ($8,200): There aren't many centers in the league who can take Howard one-on-one, but the Grizzlies, Houston's Tuesday night opponent, have one of them in Marc Gasol. Also, Memphis' defense is playing great over the last two weeks. Only the Spurs are holding opponents to fewer points per 100 possessions.
Reggie Jackson, PG, Pistons ($7,400): Another talented player with an awful matchup on Tuesday. Any player going up against the Spurs' D -- playing at a level we haven't seen in about eight years -- is one worth avoiding. Ones like Jackson who struggle shooting are even worse. San Antonio loves packing the paint and daring non-shooters to connect from the outside. That does not bode well for Jackson.
Other Notables
The Bulls get to face a bad Bucks defense Tuesday, which makes Jimmy Butler an excellent play. ... James Harden can score against anyone, but because of his matchup against the Grizzlies it might make sense to spend your money elsewhere. ... If you're looking for a game to target, look no further than the Lakers-Pelicans tilt. Neither team can stop anyone.
