The NBA is radically changing its year-end awards presentation, planning to announce MVP and other major trophies on June 26 in a postseason awards show. The show will take place in New York and will be televised on TNT.
The NBA will announce all major awards at a postseason show this year
This closely follows what the NHL has done for more than a decade.

Previously, the NBA announced major awards throughout the first three rounds of the postseason. We learned Stephen Curry was the league’s first unanimous MVP on May 11, and it was revealed that Kawhi Leonard was Defensive Player of the Year on May 16. Under the new format, those results will be delayed more than a month before the postseason awards show can occur.
The awards that will be presented at the show include: MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man Award, Most Improved Player, and Coach of the Year.
The move follows the NHL, which has used an award shows for its major trophies for more than a decade, and in Las Vegas since 2009. In their version, finalists are announced in April, early in the postseason, and the show is also held in late June.
It’s unclear how closely the NBA will copy that format. Presenters and a venue for the show will be announced at a later date.
