Good morning. Let’s basketball.
The Warriors got one back
Good morning. We have that and more in Friday’s NBA newsletter.
YOU KNOW I’M NOT DEAD: The Warriors aren’t ready to call it a season just yet. In a raucous, nerve-rattling affair in Oakland, Golden State pulled out a 120-111 victory as Stephen Curry scored 31, Andrew Bogut was a major factor and Draymond Green seemed to climb out from under a rock. (Curry was really good on offense.) The Warriors bench was wonderful, too, with Mo Speights doing work. Kevin Durant had 40 for the Thunder, who battled to the very end. The good news for OKC is they can try again in Game 6 on Saturday back at home.
THIS WILL BE A THING: In the post-game, a reporter asked Durant if Curry is underrated as a defender, and Russell Westbrook straight-up started laughing. This is so wrong and so right at the same time.
NOTED: Before the game, Mike Prada unleashed his huge analysis of how the Thunder’s defense was limiting Golden State’s opportunities. Obviously, the Warriors figured it out enough to put up 120 in Game 5.
ON THE AIR TONIGHT: Cleveland attempts to finish off the Raptors in Toronto at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
GOD BLESS KLOE: Kyle Lowry reacting to the Game 5 box score was just marvelous.
OKAY THEN: The Rockets have chosen Mike D’Antoni as the team’s new head coach. Seems like the right fit for a team with a high-scoring superstar who does what he wants and a horribly undisciplined defense. Man, I hope Dwight Howard opts in now just to see the look on Mike D. and Daryl Morey’s faces.
BTW: David Fizdale is official in Memphis. That wraps up the coaching carousel. Unless ... no, no other coaches will get fired or resign. No. UNLESS ...
ALL-NBA TEAMS: Here are the key takeaways from the All-NBA teams: DeAndre Jordan made first team because enough voters (including a number of whom I respect deeply) kept the Best Center in the NBA, DeMarcus Cousins, off their ballots due to injury and saltiness; Pau Gasol got two first team votes; Damian Lillard is your latest “no All-Star but yes All-NBA” guy PLUS he got a Rose Rule bonus worth about $20 million; Anthony Davis misses out on that extra $24 million from the Rose Rule.
AND FINALLY: I love me some Spelling Bee. But the greatest spelling bee moment of all time happened Thursday night on Twitter. It cannot be topped. It is everything.
Happy Friday. See you next time.
