While you were out pouring Henny and D’usse shots left and right on Saturday night, 11 NBA games were played. Here’s a hint as to how that went: both the defending champs and the runners-up took bad losses.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s career night and 10 other things that happened Saturday night
The Greek Freak was the standout star of a wonky slate of NBA results.

Here’s what you missed:
Giannis Antetokounmpo had the best night of his life
Antetokounmpo scored a career-high 44 points on a ridiculous 17-of-23 shooting night to lead the Bucks to a 113-110 win over the Trail Blazers. In the fourth quarter, he scored 17 points on seven-of-eight shooting — that’s 87.5 percent, guys — including a steal and slam via C.J. McCollum and the game-saving block on Jusuf Nurkic.
Antetokounmpo became the first Bucks player since Ray Allen in 2001 to open a Milwaukee season with three straight 30-point games. And if you’re ever in the same company as Jesus Shuttlesworth, you’re doing something right.
James Johnson eviscerated Victor Oladipo
This one doesn’t really need much of an explanation.
The Cavaliers got annihilated... by the Magic
Without arguably their second-best player in Aaron Gordon, Orlando bludgeoned Cleveland, 114-93. The Magic led by as many as 37 — I repeat, thirty-seven — in the fourth quarter up 106-69.
Should you, helpless Cavs fan, be worried?
No.
Derrick Rose didn’t play. Isaiah Thomas won’t play for awhile. The Cavs were playing the second game of a back-to-back after a tough matchup against Milwaukee, and even though the Magic were coming off of a loss against the Nets, they had six players score in double digits, including 19 points from Jonathon Simmons.
Cleveland doesn’t play for the regular season. They play for the championship, and a measly October loss doesn’t faze The King. Moving on.
The Grizzlies have the Warriors’ number
In a game where one team has two All-Stars and the other has two championship rings in the last three seasons, you’d probably put your money on the team with some serious jewelry, right?
Wrong.
Stephen Curry had four fouls in the first two quarters and didn’t get a whistle blown on this rack attack, so he did what most sane, frustrated pro basketball players do and threw his mouthpiece at the ref.
But you know a brotherhood is tight when your teammate and Finals MVP has your back. In this case, Kevin Durant’s version of having Curry’s back was giving someone the third of his five fingers.
Memphis has Golden State’s number for the second season in a row, and credit head coach David Fizdale for having a game plan that’s successfully stopped the most potent offense and defense in the NBA.
Should you, helpless Warriors fan, be worried?
Nope. Golden State lost to Houston in the opener, then beat New Orleans before dropping Saturday night’s game to Memphis. Even still, they’re far and away the best team in the league on multiple fronts.
Here’s an adequate representation of how you should feel:
Milos Teodosic hurt his left foot
It’s unclear what the severity of Teodosic’s injury is, but the Clippers ruled him out for Saturday night’s game against the Suns.
Bobby Portis apologized for punching Nikola Mirotic in the face
After literally breaking his teammate’s face and was levied an eight-game suspension, Bulls forward Bobby Portis issued a public statement lamenting his actions.
Markelle Fultz still can’t hit a free throw
We already knew Fultz’s free throw was a regular season problem. But my oh my, did things devolve on Saturday night.
It doesn’t help that the 76ers got blown out by 34 to drop to an 0-3 start to the season. It’s OK, though. When you trust the process, this is your reaction to everything.
Patrick Beverley took the ball from the Suns five times
And they all looked a little something like this:
Drake drank Pinot Grigio while the Raptors destroy the 76ers
Must be nice.
Joe Ingles worked on trash talking this summer
Player development is a thing in Utah, right?
And the Knicks gave a 21-point lead right back to the Pistons
New year, same Knicks, I guess.
Saturday night’s NBA scores
Bucks 113, Trail Blazers 110
Grizzlies 111, Warriors 101
Spurs 87, Bulls 77
Pistons 111, Knicks 107
Magic 114, Cavaliers 93
Raptors 128, 76ers 94
Clippers 130, Suns 88
