The Kings traded DeMarcus Cousins DURING the NBA All-Star Game

We have that and more in Monday’s slightly on-edge NBA newsletter.

It’s morning. I suppose that’s good. Let’s basketball. Or not. Your decision, really.

The Kings have traded DeMarcus Cousins to the Pelicans. They set up the trade during Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game, where Cousins played all of two minutes and his new teammate Anthony Davis won MVP and broke Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring record.

The return on the deal is, uh, something: Buddy Hield, New Orleans’ 2017 first-round pick, a 2017 second-round pick from Philadelphia, Tyreke Evans (welcome back!), and Langston Galloway. Omri Casspi is also headed to NOLA.

This is ... not a good trade for the Kings. It’s quite a bad trade for multiple reasons I will scream into the abyss for the next 10-12 years.

The Pelicans are 2.5 games out of the playoffs in the West. Assuming Boogie and Brow are as awesome as we think they’ll be, the Warriors might be a touch nervous about that first-round matchup.

... And Plenty More

Cousins was sick of the trade rumor questions after the All-Star Game. Well, good thing he’s done with those now.

NBA 2K17 rejected the Boogie trade as too lopsided.

By the way, the All-Star Game was incredible and I wish we had a day to spend reflecting on its greatness. In addition to AD’s 52-point explosion — most of them on lob finishes — we had Giannis Antetokounmpo dunking all over Stephen Curry AFTER Steph laid down to avoid a Giannis fast break, an adorable Kevin Durant-Russell Westbrook give-and-go, THE M’FING ROOTS doing the best player intros ever, and more.

All-Star Saturday was not quite as amazing. Glenn Robinson III’s winning dunk was sweet, but the contest overall didn’t live up to last year at all. (Here are all the dunks, ranked. Here are three easy ways to improve the reliability of the dunk contest.) Kristaps Porzingis won the Skills Challenge, making big men 2 for 2 since the format change. But the best part of the night was the shooting tribute to Craig Sager.

Nothing beats Dikembe Mutombo’s reaction to disappointing dunks.

This was not the worst dunk contest ever, though. That honor remains with 1997, the year that actually (if temporarily) killed the dunk contest.

Guy Fieri was a constant presence in the background camera shots all weekend long. It was like Where’s Waldo in Flavortown.

Charlotte Wilder’s conspiracy theory about Kyrie Irving’s flat-Earth conspiracy theory seems true.

Mike Prada with a video on how Isaiah Thomas makes taller players look silly.

Read Dragonfly Jonez on Michael Jordan, the greatest hater of all time. I hadn’t heard the coupon story.

Of course Mark Cuban wore a jersey number that was also a tweak of the president of the United States.

And finally, Jarrius Robertson is pure joy.

The 2017 Hall of Fame finalists were announced. Chris Webber finally made this cut. That it took two years to become a finalist after becoming eligible indicates to me it will take him a couple years to get in.

Be excellent to each other.
