Joel Embiid has played in way fewer games in his first 3 years than Greg Oden did

Joel Embiid’s recent knee injury has him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Injuries have not been kind to Joel Embiid in his first three years in the NBA. On Wednesday, the 76ers announced that they would shut down Embiid for the rest of the season due to a torn meniscus after also missing his first two seasons in the league due to a broken bone in his foot.

That leaves Embiid having played a total of 31 games during the 2016-2017 season. Add in the fact he did not play at all in his first two seasons, and he has now only played 31 games out of a total of 246 over the three years. That means he’s played in just 13 percent of possible games for the Sixers.

The obvious comparison is to Greg Oden, and you’re not going to like to hear this, Sixers fans.

If you compare Embiid’s first three years to Oden’s, Oden actually played 82 games in that time frame. That puts him at playing a total of 33 percent of total games, which is quite a bit more than Embiid. After his second season, Oden missed three seasons in a row and barely played again.

You cannot directly compare the two, as Oden had three microfracture procedures on his knees and a fractured left patella that ultimately ended his time in Portland. Embiid’s injuries started with a broken foot, followed with a less serious a knee injury. But while those are completely separate injuries, the timing is frustrating. It’s concerning that Embiid has actually missed more time than Oden did during his career.

While Embiid’s current injury does not have much of an immediate impact for Philadelphia, given the Sixers were likely out of the playoffs, it doesn’t bode well for Embiid’s health long term.

The Sixers also traded Nerlens Noel to the Dallas Mavericks at the trade deadline and are still dealing with Ben Simmons’ injury. In addition, they’ll also have to decide what to do with the Embiid’s rookie extension this summer.

The Sixers have found them in another tricky situation. Trust the Process, they say.
