The Los Angeles Clippers will try to tie up their first-round series against the Utah Jazz at Staples Center tonight on TNT after losing Game 1, 97-95, in disheartening fashion.

It was a back-and-forth affair until the game’s final seconds, when Joe Johnson sunk the Clippers with a one-handed floater at the buzzer.

Chris Paul tried to keep the Clippers alive in the fourth quarter by scoring 10 straight points, but Los Angeles wasn’t able to counter the clutch shooting of Johnson (21 points) and Gordon Hayward (19 points) to prevent a Game 1 upset.

The Jazz’s victory was dampened by the loss of star center Rudy Gobert, who was carried to the locker room after hyperextending his left knee on the game’s opening possession. Although Gobert hopes to play later in the series, there’s no timetable for his return and he won’t play in Game 2.

Enter Derrick Favors, who stepped up big time to fill the Jazz’s void in the middle. He logged 31 minutes (the most he’s played since March 6) and did a solid job against the much bigger DeAndre Jordan, scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds.

CP3 and Blake Griffin finished with 25 and 26 points, respectively, but the Clippers will need more production from their supporting cast if they want to win Game 2. As long as Gobert remains sidelined, expect Los Angeles attack the paint early and often.

As for the Jazz, they’ll need increased production from everyone if they want to win more comfortably in Game 2 and hold a commanding 2-0 series lead.

These two teams were expected to give us an entertaining first-round matchup, and tonight’s game is must-see TV as the Clippers fight to avoid another early playoff exit.

Utah’s proven it will be a tough out, though, with or without Gobert manning the middle.
