In the third quarter of Wizards-Hawks Game 2, Washington fans began chanting, “Refs you suck.” Fans often do this, but the impetus behind this is that both sides have been complaining about the refereeing since the series started. Here are the chants.

But it’s not just Washington. Fans on both sides are complaining.

Both the Wizards and the Hawks found themselves in the penalty only five minutes into the second half, and the two teams have already shot nearly 50 free throws with time left in the third quarter. We had a “foul trouble” graphic displayed on the broadcast early in the third quarter. You never see that, because NBA players are smart and don’t foul that frequently in 99 percent of games.
However, it has happened in this game, and it’s led to a choppy gameplan, frustrated fans, and plenty of Twitter jokes.
As mentioned, Game 1 caused plenty of complaints, too. In that game, the two sides combined for 56 free throws, a number they’re on pace to break. After the game, the Hawks complained about the Wizards’ physicality, and the Wizards responded in kind.
As a viewer, I don’t care about that stuff, but I do want a watchable game. Unfortunately, so far, Game 2 has been a slog, and that’s a losing situation for everyone involved.
