Memphis is down to San Antonio, 2-0, with the series shifting to the Grind House. Can they rally back?
San Antonio took the first two games at home behind two Herculean efforts by Kawhi Leonard. They also had a nod from the referees, who whistled twice as many foul calls for the Spurs than for the Grizzlies.
Leonard outgunned Memphis from the free throw line by himself, in a tangible free throw disparity that sent Grizzlies head coach David Fizdale on a postgame tirade after Game 2 and left Memphis’ players clamoring for foul calls.
Free throws or not, the Grizzlies are at a disadvantage.
Marc Gasol was nothing short of superb, setting a playoff career-high of 32 points in Game 1. But he had little to no help as San Antonio ran away with the game in the second half.
Memphis likely yearns for Chandler Parsons, who they regrettably signed to a four-year, $94 million contract before knee surgery cut his season short. In the few games he played this season, Parsons averaged 6.2 points on 27 percent three-point shooting.
The Grizzlies have enjoyed outbursts from Mike Conley, who scored 24 points in Game 2, and Zach Randolph, who brought 18 points off the bench. But Gasol only scored 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting in the second game, and it will take a perfect all-around game from Memphis’ trio to compete with the second-seeded Spurs.
