Dewayne Dedmon agrees to sign with Atlanta Hawks, per report

Dewayne Dedmon will sign a new deal with the Atlanta Hawks, according to The Vertical’s Shams Charania. The deal will reportedly be for two years and $14 million with a player option in the second year. Dedmon has played four seasons in the NBA, most recently with the San Antonio Spurs. He averaged just over 17 minutes per game, putting up 5.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Dedmon is a 7’0 center who could likely start for the Hawks after the team traded away Dwight Howard to the Hornets.

Dedmon is still relatively young at 27, and has only played four years in the league. He had a breakout season under Coach Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, starting 37 games and playing in 76. All of Dedmon’s averages last year were career highs for him, but his most impressive outing was a game where he played 32 minutes while putting up 17 points and 17 rebounds in a 103-92 win over the Pistons. With the ability to get more playing time in Atlanta, Hawks fans can hope to see more of this side of Dedmon.

This will certainly be Dedmon’s best opportunity to become a starter in the league. The Hawks have moved on from Dwight Howard, Paul Millsap, and Tim Hardaway Jr. this summer, making Dedmon the team’s biggest free agency target. Dedmon is absolutely a serviceable front court player and can fill a need for the Hawks in that department. He’s a great rebounder and has an arsenal of post moves that can grow even further in Atlanta.
