LeBron James is done with the jersey burning. It’s familiar territory for James as his jerseys were the first to be “burned” in a way that went viral after he left Cleveland in 2010.

LeBron James has had enough with the jersey burning.

Now it’s become a trend that has gotten completely out of hand, and it’s no shock that LeBron is over it. Most recently, a Celtics fan posted a video burning the jersey of Isaiah Thomas. This particular jersey burning was over the top for most fans and James as well, considering Thomas didn’t choose to leave Boston. He was traded.
James points out the double standard that many fans have for their favorite players. It’s OK for a fan to want a player to leave, or be traded, if he isn’t performing well — but it’s not OK if that player wants to leave on his own. Many fans feel a personal connection to these athletes, but it’s always good to remember that most of us would take a better job with a bigger paycheck if we were offered it too.
Bottom line: The jersey burning trend needs to stop, best said by SB Nation’s Harry Lyles Jr.:
It’s very lame to burn a jersey you spent money on to get some likes and retweets. Be more creative than that if you are so desperately thirsty to go viral.
