The Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade has dominated NBA discussion since it went down on the evening of Aug. 22. Many recurring questions surrounding the trade have popped up:
Watch Brad Stevens explain the Isaiah Thomas trade to a young Celtics fan
Stevens had a great response on the fly.
And maybe the most popular — “How could Boston trade away Isaiah Thomas after he gave them so much on and off the court?”
It’s such a hot topic that even kids in the Boston area want to know. At an event in Springfield, Mass., this young man, Shea, got right to the point:
The clip starts with Brad Stevens trying to convince Shae, who is wearing a Notre Dame T-shirt, that Butler is the better basketball program. Once Shae is convinced, he moves right into his hard-hitting question for Stevens: “Why did you trade Isaiah Thomas?”
Stevens responded on the fly and did quite well:
“I think that that’s an excellent question. Here’s what I’d tell you — is that what he did in Boston the last two-and-a-half years have been incredible. I said earlier what he’s meant to me, what I think of him, how great he’s been in the locker room, what kind of a teammate he’s been. Those are all really, really, really hard decisions, and that’s the hard part of being a professional basketball coach. I’ve stared at the wall many times and thought, ‘Man having guys in college for four years and knowing exactly when they’re coming and going is a pretty good way of doing things.’ That’s a tough one.”
