Kevin Durant just released one of the prettiest colorways of his KD 10 we’ve seen yet and it appears they’re also a shot at his past BFF, Russell Westbrook. They’re called the KDX Red Velvet — and they’re beautiful and surrounded by cupcakes.
Kevin Durant’s ‘cupcake’ shoes are deliciously petty
The “KDX Red Velvet” has obvious meaning.

With a style of play as smooth as velvet, KD is known for having the most fluid game in the game today. Effortlessly making defenders look helpless, always ready to cook his next victim. He dominates the game with unrivaled versatility, forever motivated by the sweet taste of victory. At the end of the day, winning is all that matters and anything else is just icing on the cake. The KDX ‘Red Velvet’ celebrates the smoothest player in the game and his undying quest for the sweet taste of victory.
While this was a nice attempt at a cover up, the real reason they’re surrounded by cupcakes is Russell Westbrook. It all started the day Durant chose to leave the Thunder for the Warriors.
This is how we got here:
- Westbrook posted a picture of cupcakes on Instagram the day Kevin Durant left OKC.
- We found out that later that Kendrick Perkins used to call teammates “cupcake” if he thought they were soft.
- When Durant returned to OKC for the first time, fans were dressed up like cupcakes, made cupcake signs, and even shouted “cupcake” at him throughout the game.
- Then Stephen Curry and Draymond Green wore “cupcake” shirts for their postgame pressers, after winning said game 130-114.
- From there, the Warriors and Durant embraced the cupcake. From posing with cupcakes, to wearing a cupcake hat, Durant took back the joke for himself.
It looks like Durant gets the final say, for now. Petty reasons or not, these shoes are absolutely gorgeous and the cupcakes look pretty good, too. The Red Velvet will be available on Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. ET for $150.
