The Milwaukee Bucks plan to interview San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon for their vacant head coaching position, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Hammon is the league’s first female assistant coach and will now also be the first female to interview for a head coaching position in the NBA.

Milwaukee’s top coaching position has been vacant since firing Jason Kidd in late January, although Joe Prunty filled the spot in the interim. The Bucks have one of the most desirable landing spots in the league, with a generational player in Giannis Antetokounmpo and several other attractive young pieces.
Hammon is a future Basketball Hall of Famer and WNBA legend. In 2015, she was hired as the first women’s assistant coach by the Spurs, a spot she has filled ever since. She had been mentioned over the past few years as a potential head coaching candidate, but this is the first offseason where her name appeared to pick up any momentum.
It’s unclear when Gregg Popovich plans to retire, although a recent ESPN report revealed that he had considered it in recent years. It’s likely that San Antonio would consider Hammon to lead their franchise if Popovich leaves, but you certainly couldn’t blame Hammon for accelerating that timeline if the opportunity presented itself.
Hammon spent 16 years in the WNBA, finishing with 450 games and averaging 13.9 points and 3.8 assists throughout her career.
