The Atlanta Hawks shipped Carmelo Anthony his official No. 15 jersey on Thursday. He never got to wear the jersey on the court, but according to ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, he wanted one to add to his collection.
The Hawks made Carmelo Anthony a jersey they paid him $25.5 million to never wear
Melo should now have jerseys from Denver, New York, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, and soon, Houston.

After one season in Oklahoma City — the worst of his 15-year career — Anthony and a future first-round pick were traded to the Atlanta Hawks for Dennis Schroder. The Hawks reached a buyout agreement on Anthony’s contract, saving the veteran’s minimum $2.4 million on his $27.9 million contract for him to walk away and become an unrestricted free agent. He ultimately agreed to sign with the Houston Rockets.
In essence, either Melo paid $2.4 million for this Hawks jersey, or Atlanta spent $10 million (the difference between Schroder’s $15.5 million salary and the remaining $25.5 cap hit on Anthony’s deal) making it. That’s one expensive ass jersey. Either way, this was a dope gesture by the Hawks, one that other teams should replicate when they buy players’ contracts out after a trade.
