LeBron James lived his best life this summer

James won the summer.

LeBron James’ decision to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent this summer was a paradigm-shifting moment of cataclysmic proportions in the NBA. You also may have forgotten it even happened with everything else James has done over the offseason.

James is a man of many hashtags, and he’s adopted a new one recently: #MoreThanAnAthlete. James has fully leaned into the idea since since joining the Lakers, emerging as a Hollywood mogul, a corny basketball dad, a powerful philanthropist, and so much more over the course of just a few months.

James has done it all with a giant smile on his face, somehow making the greatest basketball player alive even more famous on the brink of his 16th season. This was the summer of LeBron in every way.

These were his best moments.

Jumped off a cliff before Lakers signing

We should have seen the summer of James coming the moment he tepidly leaped into the water yelling “BLACK EXCELLENCE” days before hitting the free-agent market. This is slightly dangerous and would irk the front offices of most teams league-wide, but no matter. It was a sign that James was going to do whatever he wanted all summer, regardless of what anyone thought of it.

We’re docking him points for not doing a cannonball, yet giving him points for coining the term “videoshopped” in the Instagram caption. James always comes out ahead.

Embraced being a visible sports dad

Bronny James officially became a person of interest in the sports world this summer as a rising eighth grader playing in grassroots tournaments. Dad was with him the whole way, cheering on his oldest son in the gym.

Remember when James jumped in the warmup line with a bunch of eighth graders and started unleashing dunk after dunk? Yeah, that happened.

And my favorite moment: teaching his young daughter Zhuri how to defend like Collin Sexton.

Opened a public school in Akron

It seemed like no one knew James was opening a public school in Akron until it actually happened. Suddenly, the entire country was talking about it. James’ I Promise School is a unique endeavor aimed at serving low-income and at-risk students in his hometown.

James has ramped up his philanthropy efforts in recent years, and this is his biggest success yet.

Why is this school so important to James? Because he knows what his students are going through firsthand.

“I rode the same streets. I rode on the same streets they ride their bike on. I know the same emotions, the good, the bad, the adversity. Everything that these guys are going through, the drugs, the guns, everything that they going through as kids, I know.”

It’s hard out there for James haters when he’s using his wealth and platform to impact underprivileged kids in his community. The world would be a better place if more celebrities cared the way James does.

Did a million things in Hollywood

James’ move to the Lakers appears to have been influenced as much by his ambitions in Hollywood as his ambitions on the court. Here is a brief list of what he’s signed on for during his time in LA:

That’s not even everything, because it seems like James adds a new project every week.

Took on President Donald Trump (again)

James sat down with CNN in August to discuss his new school. Before long, the discussion turned to Donald Trump, a man with whom James already has a history. James had this to say about Trump and his incessant chatter about the NFL’s anthem policy:

“He’s dividing us,” James said. “And what I’ve noticed over the past few months [is] he’s kind of used sport to kind of divide us, and that’s something that I can’t relate to, because I know that sport was the first time I ever was around someone white, and I got an opportunity to see them and learn about them, and they got an opportunity to learn about me, and we became very good friends.”

Trump heard this and did what he always does: tweet about it.

Of course, Trump used to be big a James fan before he realized the basketball star actually does things to help people:

We also just passed the one-year anniversary of the U BUM tweet. Hug your loved ones.

Broke new ground in the shoe game

James has been involved in the sneaker game since he came into the league in 2003, but he broke new ground with the debut of his HFR x LeBron 16 this summer. It’s the first shoe from a male athlete’s line designed for women by women.

Read Natalie Weiner’s great story on the inspiration behind the shoe and the designers who made it happen. The shoes, which retail for $250, are already sold out on the Nike website.

Hung out with Justin Bieber and Ben Simmons at a fashion show

James showed up at a fashion show in an LA skate park to support designer John Elliot, who reportedly supplied James with the “$1610 leather Rider’s jacket he wore for 21 straight games last season.” With advanced stats like that, who needs RPM.

The fashion show resulted in this photo, featuring Bieber in a Lakers hat, Simmons wearing a fanny pack across his chest, and former New York Knicks coach Whoopi Goldberg.

Sorry, but we’re all cuffing our jeans this fall because James and Simmons are doing it.

Watched a lot of sports

James is just like you and I: he loves sports! He tweeted about them all summer.

He tweeted about boxing:

He tweeted about the WNBA Finals:

He tweeted a lot about the NFL:

We’re still waiting for James to tweet about esports, but surely that’s around the corner.

Did a no-hands shot of tequila with Ellen

When you see the Lakers signing JaVale McGee, Lance Stephenson, and Michael Beasley in free agency:

Congratulated a lot of people on a lot of things!

Did you do something cool this summer? If so, James probably congratulated you.

Celebrated his fifth anniversary

James broke out all the stops to celebrate his fifth anniversary with his wife Savannah. He had Daniel Caesar serenade her with a private concert:

Then he got Travis Scott to perform:

As James noted, the two have been together a lot longer than five years:

Signed on for Space Jam 2

It’s finally happening. James has been in talks about starring in a Space Jam sequel for years, and now the project is official, complete with a producer and director and everything.

Only one problem: the Monstars are going to have a big advantage if James refuses to slide up to the four (or even the five?).

This tweet sums it up well

There’s no question that LeBron James won the summer. Winning on the court with the new-look Lakers will be e a little bit harder.
