The difference in this half so far has been the play of Wichita State’s David Kyles. The 6’4 junior didn’t score in the first half, but has looked explosive in the second frame. Kyles has racked up 13 points, including three big three-pointers, and has added 2 steals and a block.
Connecticut Vs. Wichita State: Shockers Lead Late
UConn opened the half looking to run and extended its lead to 37-32 before the Shockers woke up. Toure’ Murry hit a three-pointer at the 18:17 mark, then Kyles nailed one on the following possession, before J.T. Durley converted an easy layup to stretch Wichita State’s lead to 40-37. That 8-0 run forced Jim Calhoun to call a timeout to settle his young team down.
After a UConn basket, Kyles nailed another three-pointer to cap the 11-2 run and give the Shockers a 43-39 lead.
The Huskies’ freshmen have started to look like freshman in this half. They’ve made some silly mistakes and forced contested shots. Kemba Walker (12 points, 2 steals) has played played well on both ends of the floor and he’s really shown tremendous heart trying to bring the Huskies back when he’s actually been on the floor.
Shabazz Napier (8 points, 4 steals) continues to attack relentlessly when he has the ball and it’s easy to see that he’ll be a player for UConn in the future. Love his aggressiveness.
The Shockers lead right now 62-55 with 7:42 remaining as Murry (17 points), Kyles (13 points) and J.T. Durley (8 points) are leading the way.
