The Kentucky Wildcats are headed to the finals of the 2010 EA Sports Maui Invitational thanks to a pair of fantastic freshmen. In front of a raucous crowd at the Lahaina Civic Center, the Wildcats earned a 74-67 win over the Washington Huskies.
No. 8 Kentucky Vs. No. 13 Washington: Brandon Knight Leads Wildcats To Win
Freshman point guard Brandon Knight lived up to all the hype surrounding him, as he scored 24 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 1 steal. While he did turn the ball over 8 times, that was largely due to some excellent on-ball defense from the Huskies.
Fellow freshman Terrence Jones looked every bit the future lottery pick yesterday, but today he may have been more impressive. Jones slogged through a tough night shooting from the field (just 4-of-13) but still managed to score 16 points and grab 17 rebounds, while adding 4 blocks.
For the Huskies it was a tough night. Star point guard Isaiah Thomas may not have had a more disappointing night in his career. Thomas finished the game with just 13 points after hitting just 4-of-14 shots from the field (0-of-4 from three-point range). Thomas even struggled from the free throw line (5-of-10).
Washington hit just 25-of-65 shots from the field (38.5 percent) on the night. Not a great night for Lorenzo Romar’s squad.
So Kentucky will face UConn tomorrow night for the championship at the 2010 EA Sports Maui Invitational at 10 p.m. on ESPN.
Meanwhile, Washington will face Michigan State in the third place game at 5 p.m. On ESPN 2.
