For the third time in the last seven days, the Tennessee Volunteers have lost to an unranked opponent. To add insult to injury, the USC Trojans did the bidding on Tuesday night, nipping Tennessee down the stretch, 65-64. USC, if you’ll remember, raided the Vols football team when looking for a new head coach, settling on Lane Kiffin.
USC Vs. Tennessee: Trojans Send Vols To Third Straight Loss, 65-64
USC jumped out to an early lead and hung on in the waning, thwarting a late Tennessee run to seal the victory on the Vols home court. The Vols had a shot to win as time expired, but couldn’t convert, ending a disappoint week in Knoxville. Two of Tennessee’s three losses this season have come at home. In Bruce Pearl’s tenure as head coach, the Vols have lost just four non-conference games, three of which came in 2010.
Maurice Jones led the way for the Trojans with 15 points, four assists, four rebounds and four steals. Jio Fontan and Alex Stephenson each added 13 points while Bryce Jones provided a spark off the bench, scoring 11 points. Stephensen also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Forward Tobias Harris scored a team-high 14 points for Tennessee. Cameron Tatum added 12 points, followed closely by Melvin Goins’ 10 points. Brian Williams narrowly missed a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The loss dropped Tennessee to 7-3 on the season and 4-2 at home. USC improved to 7-5 with the win, its only road win of the year thus far.
