Georgetown Vs. Notre Dame: Irish Take Control Early, Down Hoyas 69-55
And it was Notre Dame opening its conference schedule in impressive fashion, thumping Georgetown by 14 points in the Big East opener for both teams. Notre Dame never trailed in the game and led for the last 31 minutes. With the win, the Irish are a perfect 9-0 at home.
Georgetown’s Austin Freeman led all scorers in the game with 21 points, but he was the only Hoya to hit double digits. Tim Abromaitis had 20 for Notre Dame, followed by Ben Hansbrough with 17 and Tyrone Nash with 15. Nash also had 10 rebounds on the night.
Georgetown shot slightly better from the field, but Notre Dame drained seven of 16 three-point shots, with Abromaitis leading the way going 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Irish also almost 82 percent from the free-throw line on 27 shots, compared to the Hoyas’ 5-of-9 effort.
Both teams return to action on New Year’s Day. Notre Dame will face another high-profile opponent, traveling to No. 5 Syracuse. Georgetown will try to rebound at home against DePaul.
