The Syracuse Orange dominated the Michigan St. Spartans in the paint and used Jim Boeheim’s trademark tenacious zone defense to take the lead into halftime, 38-26. The Spartans had no answer inside, allowing Syracuse to score 26 of its 38 points in the paint. On the glass it wasn’t much better, with Syracuse holding an 18-12 edge on the boards, including 7 first-half offensive rebounds. Syracuse’s Rick Jackson led the way, nearly picking-up a double-double in the first half.

Jackson finished the half with 10 points and nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end, to lead the Orange. Scoop Jardine, one of the best names in basketball, added nine points. Kris Joseph was close-behind with seven.
Korie Lucious, coming off the bench to give the Spartans a boost, score eight points and added four assists in the half. Durrell Summers chipped-in eight points and four rebounds. The Spartans, faced with the tough task of breaking the Syracuse zone defense, started the half slow but finally picked it up down the stretch, using transition buckets and crisp passing to find open looks.
