Jimmy V Classic, Michigan State Vs. Syracuse: Orange Close Strong To Drop Spartans, 72-58

The inside-outside tandem of Scoop Jardine and Rick Jackson helped the Syracuse Orange pull-away from the Michigan State Spartans in the Jimmy V Classic. After Michigan State closed the gap to just two midway through the second half, Syracuse finished strong en route to a 72-58 win.

Michigan State got as close as two, down 48-46, with 13:16 left. From there, it was all Syracuse, with the Orange finishing the game on a 24-12 run to close-out the Spartans. It was strong defense propelling the Orange again, as Jim Boeheim’s tenacious zone defense limited the Spartans to just 38.9 percent shooting from the field, including 7-24 from three-point range.

Scoop Jardine led the way for Syracuse, scoring 19 points and keying the Orange’s run to put the Spartans away. Rick Jackson was a dominant force inside, scoring 17 points and grabbing 16 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year. Kris Joseph rounded-out the Syracuse scoring trio with 14 points.

Durrell Summers was the only Spartan able to get it going all night, scoring 19 points in a losing effort. Korie Lucious came off the bench and added 10 points and five assists. Draymond Green pulled-down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Michigan State fell to 6-3 with the loss while Syracuse improved to a perfect 9-0. The win was Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim’s fourth-straight over Tom Izzo and the Spartans.
