Mike Krzyzewski broke Bob Knight’s all-time wins record for men’s Division I coaches on Tuesday night, and he did it in front of a friendly crowd. Many of his former players attended the Duke’s game against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden -- and not just because so many of them are currently unemployed, thanks to the NBA lockout.
Mike Krzyzewski’s Record: Former Players Watch Coach K Pass Bob Knight
From the Associated Press:
“It’s been a dark time for us NBA guys, but this is one of the few blessings that this lockout has allowed us to partake in,” [Shane] Battier said.
His former classmate, Elton Brand, insisted: “Even if I’d had a game, I would’ve tried to be here.”
Grant Hill, who won national titles at Duke in 1991 and 1992 under Krzyzewski, is amazed at his former coach’s longevity:
“How you motivate a guy in 1984 compared to ‘94 or compared to ‘04 or compared to 2012, each group is a different era,” Hill told The Associated Press [...]. “A lot of coaches can get out of touch. They can’t connect. He’s been able to do that and actually almost get better.”
Numerous other Blue Devils were in the building, including Jay Williams, Bobby Hurley, Chris Duhon, Mike Dunleavy and Jay Bilas, who was calling the game for ESPN.
