Prosecutors Explore Possible Criminal Charges Following Xavier-Cincinnati Brawl
Hamilton County prosecutors are reviewing Saturday’s brawl between Xavier and Cincinnati for possible criminal charges, The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
“My office will review the matter to determine whether any criminal charges are appropriate,” Prosecutor Joe Deters noted in a Monday press release. “We will have no further comment until a decision is reached.”

Xavier has Oral Roberts and Long Beach State coming up on the schedule, but will be fortunate to have Holloway and Lyons back in time to face No. 23 Gonzaga on Dec. 31.

After an ugly fight between Xavier and Cincinnati on Saturday that featured many punches from both sides, the punishment for the Bearcats is being meted out first: Yancy Gates will be suspended for six games for his role in the fight, according to Tom Gelehrter, a director of broadcasting at the University at Cincinnati and FOX Sports broadcaster, as will Cheikh Mbodj and Octavius Ellis. Ge’Lawn Guyn will be suspended for one game.
Cincinnati’s next four games — against Wright State, Radford, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Chicago State — are not expected to test the Bearcats. But the fifth and sixth games of the suspensions handed down to Gates, Mbodj, and Ellis are a stiff non-conference test against Oklahoma and Cincinnati’s Big East opener against Pittsburgh.

Xavier, the eighth-ranked team in the country, led much of the game and appeared to be closing the game out before referees were forced to cancel the game with 9.4 seconds left with a 76-53 lead after a fight broke out. Xavier was credited with the win and the officials were left to sort out the mess.
The fracas appears to have been started when Xavier’s Tu Holloway and Cincy’s Ge’Lawn Guyn began trash-talking, as per CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman, but the end result was much worse -- as video below will show.
