Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday that he won’t coach past the 2016-17 season, which is when his current contract at U of L ends.

“When you’re 59, you’re realistic that you don’t have a whole lot of years left,” Pitino said. “My contract’s going to run out in 2017. I’m not coaching any more after that.”

Pitino, who has said many times that Louisville will be his final coaching stop, has made a multitude of references to his potential retirement throughout his 11 years at U of L. Of course he’s also made just as many statements where he’s alluded to “feeling like I can coach until I’m 90.”

Basically, Pitino’s future plans are contingent upon what type of mood he’s in at the particular moment when there’s a microphone in front of his face.

When it comes to Rick Pitino and grandiose statements of purported fact, history tells us the right move is to make a quick note of it and move on. He’ll be on the bench Louisville when the Cardinals face Georgetown on Wednesday night to open Big East play, and that’s the only fact worthy of exploring at this point.
