Today, BYU served notice that it is more than Jimmer Fredette. The hot-shooting Cougars put together an impressive 40 minutes of basketball in an 80-67 win over San Diego State that’s likely to make BYU part of the conversation about top seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
No. 7 BYU Vs. No. 6 San Diego State Final Score: Jimmer Fredette’s Cougars Shoot Down Aztecs, 80-67
Fredette was below his season average in the game, scoring “just” 25 points, but he had to really work for those points and made just eight of his 23 shots. It was the rest of his team that was the revelation: Charles Abouo was excellent, making four of five threes and scoring 18 points; Noah Hartsock and Jackson Emery both chipped in double digit point tallies. And the Cougars as a whole were red-hot from beyond the arc, making 14 of 24 threes to keep pushing a lead just out of reach for San Diego State runs.
With the win, the Cougars are likely to be the top seed in the Mountain West Conference tournament, and could win that to establish themselves as the best candidate for a No. 1 seed west of the Mississippi. But San Diego State shouldn’t suffer too much as a result of this loss.
The Aztecs were valiant in defeat, but had no recourse for BYU’s longball success: Kawhi Leonard was superb, with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double, but San Diego State could only make six threes, which eventually doomed their comeback attempt.
